Queanbeyan - Captains Flat - Lowden Forest Park
Water Wheel - Lowden Forest
Covering a total of 130km, the scenic drive from Queanbeyan loops down Bungendore Road and then back up Kings Highway.
Make a right turn at Captain Flat and follow the sealed road past some scenic country sights that will take you past many notable sites of the area such as Foxlow and Carwoola Stations and St. Thomas' Church.
While out and about make some time to poke around Captain's Flat, which sits in a valley and is what is left of a century old mining town. There are still many mines scattered around town along with a petrol station, accommodation, and refreshments.
When heading out make a left on Braidwood Road before crossing the bridge.
Follow the road for four kilometres and then make a left at Harold's Cross Road, where the junction of Harold Cross Road and Main Range Road is the start of the Tallaganda Pine Plantation; this will lead you into the State Forest, which covers almost 60,000 hectares of land.
At the Lowden Forest Park sign post turn left and follow the road for 15kms and then turn into the Park. Here you will find walking trails, toilets, wood BBQ pits, and fresh drinking water. There is also camping in the park, which is the site of an old logging camp.
Once you leave the park head back to the intersection of Cox's Creek Road and Lowden Forest Road and follow Lowden until you reach the west boundary of the forest and head towards Queanbeyan by passing through Rossi and Hoskinstown.
