Scenic Drive - Three

Queanbeyan - Big Hole - Braidwood - Bungendore

This country drive is a fabulous full day experience and is an extension of the drive to Captains Flat, as outlined in Drive 1.

After discovering Captains Flat, turn onto Braidwood Rd, off foxlow St. Just after leaving the village the road turns into dirt for the duration of Braidwood Rd, approximately 20kms, it is suitable for all vehicle types, please drive to the conditions.

The scenery on this part of the drive is nothing short of spectacular and is abundant with wildlife, birds especially.

Braidwood Rd ends at a T intersection with Krawaree Rd, turn right and headdown to the Big Hole which is in the Deua National Park ( approx 15kms) turn left at the Berlang Campground sign and follow into the campground itself ( 1-2kms).

The walk to the Big Hole is an easy one and takes in some stunning scenery, you do have to cross the Shoalhaven River so make sure your footwear is appropriate. The walk itself is a 5km round trip and well worth it, for the more adventurous you can continue on the walk past the Big Hole to the Marble Arch- this is a 13km round trip.

The Big Hole is a steep, 96-metre pit, thought to have been formed when sedimentary rocks caused underlying limestone caves to collapse and is one of several karst attractions on the western side of the National Park. If you'd like to have a more in depth look around this part of the region we suggest the topographic map Kain 8026-4s.

When you are ready to go, get back onto Krawaree Rd to head to Braidwood, approximately 40kms. Braidwood is the only fully heritage listed town on the eastern seaboard of Australia, the main Street hasn't changed that much since the 1800's. The town has some great quirky galleries and shops and some excellant georgian architecture.

Follow the Kings Hwy to Bungendore which is 44kms, another truly unique village, one that's full of world class galleries and an abundance of boutique businesses and lots of cafes to quench your thirst.

You're on the home stretch now , Bungendore is only 22kms from Queanbeyan.
