Kowen Forest was originally layered with trails to host the 24 Hour Mountain Biking Championships but now the trails have developed way past the preliminary twenty trails that make up a 24 hour lap. Therefore, there are a wide variety of trails that cater to all levels of mountain biking.
Directions: Travelling from Queanbeyan, head east, cross the river, and then make a left onto Yass Road. Drive for about 3km and then make a right onto Sutton Road for two kilometres and then make another right into Kowen Forest.
If you already know the access combination you can drive through the gate and then head out another 5km down Kowen Road and turn left at Subaru Rally. Here you want to drive around the overpass and head towards the Kowen homestead site. You can get the lock combinations by calling 13 22 81.
Difficulty level: While the trails do include some rough grades, they tend to be mild in nature so that riders can enjoy the landscape while travelling to the peaks. Experienced riders will enjoy the gradients, reaching maximum speeds to enhance their challenge.
Distances: In total, Kowen Forest boasts 40kms of trails
Locals' Trail Tip: There are several starting options from the campsite area that include heading towards the entry road for flatter areas or in the opposite direction for a greater challenge.
